Why Do Pajamas Have Pockets?

The two most important times someone would have pajamas on is when they are sleeping or when they plan to, hence removing the need to actually need pockets.

However, there are certain things you might need in bed that you really can’t keep far from you so the pockets might end up being useful after all. While this is funny and all, it got me thinking and I couldn’t help but ask “why do pajamas have pockets?”

Some persons say it exists for the use of putting important things like your credit cards safe but have you ever thought of the chance of your card getting scratched or worse getting broken?

Some still say you could keep some cash in them especially when you have to run some errands across the street. Good reasons, sure, but do they actually justify the needs for the pockets? Your answer can be right or wrong.

The brands of pajamas have people’s utmost support at heart, hence they made the pajamas with pockets because they feel and believe that people would see the need to use it. The pajamas might be on people for quite a long time especially during long nights, perhaps hours before they actually decide to sleep.

You might still be up reading and in that case, you will need a place to keep your reading glasses. Perhaps you’re suffering from a cold and you might need some tissue close to you or maybe some illness which gets worse at nights so you might need the drugs close to you.

The pocket is for something you might need in bed without having to fumble around during the dark night.

In the pockets of the pajamas, you could keep things like decongestants like vapor rub that would help you breathe properly, a tissue, handkerchiefs, lip balm, palm cream, cough drops, and even some medications you might need either prescribed or recreational.

The pajamas are not only comfortable and warm for sleeping, they have pockets that are considered as safe places for necessary and important things.

Why do brands include a pocket in the pajamas tops?

I’d say it is for the same purpose as the pocket on the pajama pants. It is made to keep important stuff in them. Let’s say you wake up in the middle of the night with a really great idea and then you forget to write it down, so decide to sleep only to forget it the next morning.

Well, if you sleep with a pen and a little notepad on the pajamas shirt, you can always write anything you remember down.

Of course, you may stab yourself mistakenly when rolling over so this is a bad and hazardous idea I guess. But you should know that important stuffs like drug medications you might need in the night can be kept in the front pocket because you might be feeling too lazy to reach out for the pockets in the pants.

The top pocket is more like an additional pocket that could come in handy which is why some brands include it on the pajamas.

How to put a pocket in your pajamas?

It gets really disheartening each time you purchase pajamas and you can’t find any pockets in them (mostly the female pajamas).  From my personal experience, I got 2 pairs of pajamas and I wore one all the time because the other one had no pockets on it and at times, I forced myself to wear the one with no pocket each time the other one was in the laundry.

So a day came and my precious pajamas with pockets got damaged in the dryer so I had no other option than to sew pockets into the neglected one and guess what, it came out just fine.

To do this, all you have to do is to carefully follow the steps below;

Get everything ready

One thing about me, I really hate pajamas with no pockets. Why bother to wear pajamas if it has no pockets on them when you could easily sew in the pockets. If you’re an individual like me, you can easily make a pocket from any old fabric with a pocket.

However, note that it’s better to use a matching color to the one on the pajamas or better still use a black fabric because most of the time, you can see the little part of the fabric visible outside the pocket.

Materials: an old fabric, pajama pants, thread, needle, a pair of scissors, chalk, pins and a sewing machine if possible.

Step 1: Use the scissors to cut out the pocket part from an old fabric

To do this, you’ll need the outline of the pocket first. You can get a sheet of paper first, bring out the pocket from old fabric, then place it on the paper properly to get an idea of the size, then cut out the outline of the pocket and pin it with the pin on the pajama fabric you want to use.

To save time, you can bring out 2 pockets at the same time from your old fabric, put them on the paper, and cut them at the same time.

Step 2: Sew the open part of the pocket together

After cutting out the pockets from your old fabric, the next thing to do is to turn the pocket to the back and stitch all the open spaces apart from the part where you’ll put your hand. To make this easier, pin the parts you want to stitch and sew the curved area to make the pocket.

To stitch, first, you double the thread on the needle and tie it, put the needle into the area you want to stitch then start sewing like you always do but you need to do it in one direction, pull the thread all through, and repeat the process twice to get one stitch. Do this continuously till all the curved areas of the pockets are stitched.

Step 3: Make a hole in the pajamas pants

All you have to do here is to turn the pants inside out, put the stitched pocket at the height you want it to be (I out mine one inch from the top), and mark the parts you want your pocket to be with a chalk and cut out the part you outlined with a chalk.

Step 4: Start sewing

If you’re sure you followed all the steps correctly, then try pinning the pockets to the hole of the pajamas with a pin and try testing it first and don’t forget to put your hands into the pocket to see how it looks, if its okay then remove it and start sewing all the pinned areas accordingly.

Congratulations, you’re all done and now you can start putting important things into the pocket of your pajamas.

FAQs

Why do most female pajamas lack pockets?

In the age of pajamas getting widely worn by people all around the world including women, it is mind-blowing that the majority of female pajamas lack pockets. There are countless complains and rants all around the web about the frustration of the lack of pockets in women’s pajamas.

Instead of complaining constantly, most resolved to wear male pajamas with pockets as they too need the pockets to keep their important stuff.

After conducting a survey, I found out the average pockets in female pajamas is less than 20% while the ones in the male are 95%, it beats me how in this era of ideas, we still can’t get pockets in women’s pajamas. After conducting thorough research, I finally found the reasons why most brands don’t include pockets in female pajamas or why the female pajamas lack pockets.

Pockets ruin the female pajamas style. If you’ve ever seen one, you’ll know of the luxurious design it comes with or even the plain patterned design, hence resisting the need to have pockets.

Many designers see the pockets as the enemy as they disrupt the lines of any female pajamas and make it look too bulky. I believe is the lack of understanding of how important these pockets can be to women. The pajamas shouldn’t be for just comfort and style, they should be for utility and function. They feel the pockets spoil the look of their pajamas on their body since most women like to look smooth.

Another reason why most female pajamas lack pockets is that the manufacturers think they know best and they don’t see the need to listen to people who purchase the pants.

My last reason why most female pajamas lack pockets is that the female pajamas fabric type is less sturdy than men’s. The softer the fabric resists the need to actually have pockets in them as they would not hold objects, as well as the male’s pajamas, do and it could result in holes and we all know it would look just bad.

With that being said, if you still need the pockets as a female, I’ll advise you to get the male pajamas as they are strong and durable enough to hold anything.

Conclusion – Why Do Pajamas Have Pockets?

Initially, the pajamas were made with no pockets but due to the trend and benefits it provides, manufacturers decided to add the pockets to the pajamas for a more enhanced style and the ability to fulfill storage use.
